What a Single Implant Involves
Potential Benefits of a Single Dental Implant
- Replaces one missing tooth with an implant-supported crown
- May help restore chewing function after healing and restoration.
- Can be designed to blend with surrounding teeth.
- Does not require adjacent teeth to support a conventional bridge.
- Requires ongoing cleaning, maintenance and dental reviews.
Single Dental Implant Treatment Process
A single-tooth implant can be used to replace a missing or non-restorable tooth. The treatment process varies between patients depending on factors such as bone availability, gum health, the condition of the surrounding teeth, and whether any additional treatment is required. In many cases, treatment involves several appointments over a period of months.
Before the Procedure: We will assess the tooth, surrounding tissues, and your overall oral health. X-rays and, where appropriate, 3D imaging may be recommended to assess the available bone and determine whether an implant is a suitable option for you.
If additional treatment, such as bone grafting or management of gum disease, is required, this may need to be completed before the implant is placed.
Placing the Implant: The dental implant is placed into the jawbone during a surgical appointment. Local anaesthetic is used to help keep the procedure comfortable, and sedation may be an option for some patients.Following implant placement, the implant needs time to heal and integrate with the surrounding bone. The healing period varies between patients and can take several months. Where appropriate, we may provide a temporary tooth during this stage, although this is not necessary or suitable in every case.
Taking the Implant Impression: Once the implant has healed sufficiently and is ready for restoration, we will take an impression or digital scan. This allows us to plan and manufacture the final implant crown, taking into account the colour, shape, and position of your surrounding teeth.
Fitting the Implant Crown: Once the final crown has been made, we will fit it to the implant. We will check the fit, appearance, bite, and function before completing the treatment. With appropriate care and maintenance, an implant-supported crown can provide a stable replacement for a missing tooth. However, an implant is not a natural tooth and requires ongoing care. Regular brushing, cleaning between the teeth, professional dental examinations, and appropriate implant maintenance are important for maintaining the health of the implant and surrounding tissues.
Comfort During Treatment: We use local anaesthetic and appropriate techniques to help make treatment as comfortable as possible. Some tenderness, swelling, or discomfort can occur following implant surgery. We will provide you with appropriate aftercare instructions and advice to help you through the recovery period.
